Two round tables on Gnaoua culture presented by the Centre for African Studies (CAS)-UM6P and Mahir Center -UM6P (Mohammed VI Polytechnic University)
Round Table 1: Gnaoua culture between orality and rituality
Participants from Mahir Center at UM6P examined the orality of the Gnaoua tradition and the symbolism of rituals. They presented a Gnaoua glossary entitled “The glossary of The Lila Gnawiya”, raising the issue of the scholarly appropriation of this centuries-old tradition. The guembri was then played via a documentary they have made, resonating with other aspects of African culture.
Participants : Marouane Jaouat (UM6p et université de Caen), Houssine Dehbi (UM6p), Mohamed Boublouh (UM6p), Mahmoud Boubii, Wafae Al Idrissi (UM6p), Kaoutar Moustaid (UM6p), Ali Benmakhlouf (UM6p)
Round Table 2: The metamorphoses of Gnaoua culture
Looking at the past from the present enables us to measure the evolutions and transformations to which Gnaoua culture continues to give rise. What are the manifestations of these transformations? Gnaoua performances, in particular, will be analyzed in terms of their theatricality. The reception of other musical forms, such as jazz, constitutes a hybridization that will be examined. An extract from a documentary will be presented in this sense.
Participants : Yasmine Daif, Omar Fertat (Université de Bordeaux), Loubna Benhaddou (UM6p), Ghita Berrada (UM6p), Meriem Alami-Kasry (UM6p), Ali Benmakhlouf (Um6p)
