The International Institute of Philosophy, founded in 1937 during the Descartes Congress in Paris by the Swedish philosopher Ake Petzäl, is one of the oldest international institutions in philosophy. Since its inception, it has aimed to establish discussion between philosophers of all tendencies and from all countries, in all branches of philosophy: metaphysics and analytical philosophy, aesthetics and logic, ethics and the history of philosophy. It has brought together the most eminent philosophers from all countries and continents, and Léon Robin, Tadeusz Kotarbinski, Alfred Ayer, Georg Henrik von Wright, Raymond Klibansky, Paul Ricoeur, Ruth Marcus, Evandro Agazzi, Jaakko Hintikka in particular have been its presidents, and Alexandre Koyré Georges Canguilhem and Pierre Aubenque have been its general secretaries. It is currently chaired by Marco Buzzoni, and includes about a hundred members of all nationalities. It is currently based at the Poincaré Archives in Nancy (France). Each year, the members of the Institute meet in a different city, at the invitation of one of its members. This is the second time that the IIP meets in Morocco after the Rabat conference in 1992, and the third time in Africa, after the Dakar conference in 1980. This year, Professor Benmakhlouf, director of the Center for African Studies, is organizing its talks at the Mohamed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir, Morocco, from 24 to 27 September, 2025 under the theme “The Powers of Imagination”.
